can make a difference. she is all smiles as she enters the hospital. when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she admits she was not so nice. >> i apologized a lot. >> now she's grateful. when she was down on her luck, no job, no health insurance, someone was there to pick her up. she got a voucher for a mammogram and a nudge from her doctor. >> in 2010 in november, he called me trifling, which is a word that means or-- you're irresponsible. when she went out the office i said i might be -- >> she got her first mammogram

at age 57. she had stage one breast cancer. surgery quickly followed and figuring out her new life as a survivor. >> i'm getting adjusted to the newness of being without something that i've been -- had for almost 50 years, 58. so it's been awhile. >> when she thinks of the thousands who will come together on sunday, ava grows stronger. >> it's spiritual, uplifting to know there's so many of us that are still fighting and holding up pictures of loved ones it. make me feel good to know you're part of a society of hope. >> and now she says she lives to pass along one emergency. >> i'm going to tell everybody i know and don't know, which i have been doing. go get a mammogram detection. don't be afraid like i was. don't wait until the last minute

because it might be stage three, four, so go early. >> a very important message and, again. the phone number is on your screen. you can get involved. now thank you for joining us. she is with survivors support. tell me what exactly you do. >> so we run survivor peer programs in nine hospitals in the state of maryland by komen funds. >> and i know you do work with survivors as well. >> yes, we match our mentors up to support them through surgery, decisions, through treatment choices and also we pair up with them has they move into survivorship. >> you also work with families as well. tell us about that. >> we do. we have the ability to talk with our patients about how important it is to speak with the children about having had breast cancer and to speak accurately with the

children to talk with the schools, to be able to share with the kids just the right amount of information to help them negotiate supporting their parents through breast cancer. >> how important is a partnership with komen and what would happen if you didn't receive those funds anymore. >> it is so important for us. we cover the nine hospitals, the south shore of maryland, eastern shore of maryland all the way out to frederick. without the funds, we would not be able to support the patients that we do. so, for example, through the six years of being with komen, we have supported close to 3,000 women. >> and it sounds like you're really making a difference behind the scenes. you're making a difference in people's lives. >> absolutely. one of the things that happen many times is we hear from patients outside the state of maryland. when we tell them of all the programs we have in the state of maryland from our survivorship programs through secretary of

all right. weather wise, the rain still coming down out to the south and west. we've got decent showers from towson extending down 95 to 295 with rain in the laurel area. that rain steadily drifting east. the rain continuing to have an impact on the traffic out there, no question about that. to the south and east there's additional rain toward dorchester county and couple of thunderstorms down here south of the d.c. area right now.

wet weather in the city, no question about that. current conditions at bwi 63 degrees. dew point 61, so it is muggy out there. some of the weather in motion today. you she that ceiling drop with the heavy rain showers coming through at times. then we get clearing at times as well. in havre de grace you can see the rain. in -- a lot of the rain was north of the state capital. temperatures to the west much cooler. you see what's headed into tonight and tomorrow. 46 in oakland giving you an idea of what would be drifting into eastern maryland over the next 12 to 24 hours. humid weather. most of us have picked up between a 10th and third of an inch of rain. there have been several lines. an additional line in the

mountain area. this primary area of precipitation will clear out. we'll be left whether dry sunny conditions. that will be nice. looks like conditions stay nice and dry land clear into the day on wednesday. as we take a broader perspective, cooler air is funneling. you can see the highs. the afternoon temperatures as high as low 50. that cooler air arriving here tomorrow will not be as chilly lo will hold us down into the -- but will hold us down into the mid-60s. drier weather to the west, still some wet weather through the rest of the overnight hours. as we look at the overall setup to the south and east, it's a tropical one. you can see tropical storm rafael, a well organized system. so rafael bears watching over the next 24 hours. we think this will become a hurricane. it's already on the threshold of

dyslexia. >> language is the key to all kinds of learning whether learning science or a soccer game. you have to master taking in language. >> reporter: the odyssey school serves students in kindergarten and 8th grade. the goal is to prepare them for mainstream grades. >> they didn't help me with my dyslexia, so i couldn't really read the passes that i would have. other people would finish it and i would be working on the first word. when i came here i blossomed. >> reporter: there are a few things educatetors want people to know. >> even though i have dyslexia, i still understand the things they are telling me. it's more difficult to read what you give me. >> reporter: with the proper educational instruction, these students can have a successful
